The First Yes: How to Back Yourself Before Anyone Else Does

There are different types of moments most people wait for throughout their lives. The approval. The invitation. The sign that says, “You’re ready now”. For many students, that moment doesn’t come in the way they expect it to. Not because they aren’t capable, but because they’re waiting for someone else to confirm what they haven’t decided for themselves yet.

The first “yes” isn’t external. It’s internal, which is the most important yes you’ll ever receive.

Self-approval is one of the most overlooked skills in life. We’re taught to seek validation through things like grades, feedback, and recognition, but we are rarely taught how to validate ourselves. Without that confidence becomes conditional. It shows up when people are clapping and disappears when they’re not.

Betting on yourself starts in smaller moments than people realize. Like raising your hand when you’re unsure, or applying for something you don’t feel “qualified” for yet. It can even be in
speaking up in a room where you’re still finding your voice.

These aren’t small risks. They’re foundational ones that shape how we move through life. Every time you choose yourself without external confirmation, you build trust with yourself, which compounds into undeniable belief and confidence within yourself.

You don’t need a big breakthrough to start backing yourself, or years of lived experience to finally feel like you have arrived. You just need to make that very important, yet personal decision for yourself.
